SUSTAINABLE ACTION
DRIVES US

OUR STRATEGY

As a globally active company, we have a special responsibility. We know that our activities have an impact on our planet. Our aim is to minimise these as much as possible in order to ensure a future worth living for current and future generations. To fulfil our responsibility, we take a strategic approach and make our decisions on a sound basis.

WE SET ALL LEVERS IN MOTION

If you take a closer look at the ecological rucksack of a wheel, you quickly realise that Scope 1 (natural gas) and Scope 2 (electricity) emissions only make up a small proportion of the footprint of our wheels. The majority of the emissions come from the primary aluminium used. For this reason, we have set ourselves an overarching sustainability target for our wheels: We want to halve the carbon footprint of our wheel by 2030, compared to our base year of 2019.

OUR STRATEGIC COLUMNS

OUR GOALS

By 2030, we want to halve the carbon footprint of our bikes compared to our base year of 2019.

How do we want to achieve this?

In addition to the energy used in production, the biggest lever is aluminium. Here we are focusing on the increased procurement of low carbon aluminium - primary aluminium with a carbon footprint of less than 5 kg CO2/kg aluminium. We also want to use post-consumer aluminium (scrap wheels), provided the quality and availability are given.

ESSENTIALITY ANALYSIS

It is important to us to identify the material topics that we focus on as part of our sustainability management and on which we report regularly. Based on the criteria of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), we have identified those topics that are either highly relevant to our stakeholders or have a significant impact on the environment and society.

With the help of an environment analysis, we first drew up a comprehensive list of potentially relevant topics. We then analysed this list together with managers from various specialist areas - in terms of their stakeholder relevance and their impact on society and the environment.

The most relevant topics for BORBET can be found in the top right-hand section, including, for example, "Sustainable products", "Energy & CO2 emissions", "Compliance & integrity" and "Human rights". The matrix makes it clear what we need to prioritise in our sustainability work. Many topics are already a natural part of our sustainability management and are being worked on intensively. Others need to be assessed in more detail and developed further.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY

The production and processing of metal is complex and sometimes energy-intensive. Natural gas and electricity are the most important energy sources. They are required in our smelters, foundries, heat treatment plants, paint shops and for mechanical processing. For us, using energy efficiently is a question of both ecological responsibility and economic necessity. That is why we have introduced energy management systems at all BORBET sites. All BORBET sites are also certified in accordance with DIN EN ISO 50001.
We have the management systems regularly reviewed through internal and external audits.

EXTERNAL RATINGS AND CERTIFICATIONS

We regularly have our sustainability performance assessed by external organisations. This helps us to constantly keep an eye on opportunities for improvement. It also gives our stakeholders the option of assessing and comparing our sustainability performance at first glance.

CDP

Once a year, we take part in the survey conducted by the non-profit organisation CDP (formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project).
Based on the information provided, CDP categorises companies into one of four levels:

    D - Disclosure:
Transparency with regard to climate aspects
    C - Awareness:
Impacts of climate aspects are known
    B - Management:
    Coordinated action on climate aspects
    A - Leadership:
    Implementation of current best practice

In 2023, we again achieved management level (B) in the two topic categories "Water" and "Climate change". Our supplier commitment was categorised by CDP as Leadership Level (A-) this year.

ECOVADIS

In addition to CDP, we are also active on the EcoVadis sustainability platform, where we have our corporate social responsibility (CSR) assessed. BORBET once again improved its score in 2023 compared to the previous year. This year, we achieved our best result with 76 out of 100 points and were rewarded with a gold medal. This puts BORBET in the top 5% of companies assessed by EcoVadis.

DRIVE SUSTAINABILITY

"Drive Sustainability" is an initiative of various vehicle manufacturers with the aim of making the supply chain in the automotive industry more sustainable.
As a supplier, we regularly complete the initiative's self-assessment questionnaire (SAQ) and provide information on the topics of sustainability management, the environment, human rights, ethics, compliance and sustainable procurement.

The following is a list of our sites' levels of fulfilment:

ALUMINIUM STEWARDSHIP INITIATIVE

BORBET has been successfully certified according to the Performance Standard of the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) in sustainable production, procurement and management of aluminium with a focus on material stewardship. This marks a real milestone for BORBET: we are the first OEM wheel manufacturer internationally to be certified to the ASI Performance Standard.
The Port Elizabeth site is also the first ASI-certified plant in Southern Africa, regardless of industry.
The ASI, a global non-profit organisation, has set itself the goal of creating greater sustainability and transparency along the entire aluminium value chain for the responsible use of aluminium as a raw material.
To this end, a standard has been developed that defines all steps from bauxite mining to aluminium processing and recycling, and monitors and certifies compliance with environmental and social aspects in this context.

OUR STRATEGIC CORNERSTONES

THE BORBET SUSTAINABILITY STRATEGY

BORBET stands for transparency: we determine the CO2 footprint along the value chain per kilogramme of wheel. This precise data collection enables us to understand the environmental impact of our products in detail. Focussing on accurate measurement underlines our active commitment to the continuous improvement of our sustainability efforts across all processes.
